SGMC Health Welcomes Back Its Volunteen Summer Program for High School Students
Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026
For high school students curious about healthcare, spending a summer at SGMC Health can be a first step toward a future career. The SGMC Health Volunteen Summer Program is now accepting applications for 2026, offering students the opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in a hospital setting while supporting patients, visitors, and staff across the health system.
Designed to be both educational and inspiring, the Volunteen Summer Program immerses students in a variety of departments across the health system. Participants have the chance to observe healthcare professionals in action, witness the commitment to patient-centered care, and learn about the behind-the-scenes administrative work that supports daily operations.
During the 2026 program, accepted students will commit to two shifts per week, each lasting four hours, from June 8 through July 24. This structured experience introduces students to real-world healthcare environments while allowing them to earn valuable volunteer hours that support academic goals and future career aspirations.
“Our Volunteen program reflects our dedication to shaping the future of healthcare,” said Hilary Willis, Executive Director of the SGMC Health Foundation. “By giving students the opportunity to engage with healthcare professionals and experience the hospital environment up close, we hope to inspire the next generation of compassionate and innovative leaders.”
The Volunteen Summer Program is open to rising ninth through twelfth grade students who maintain a B average or higher. Applications for the 2026 program are now open, with a submission deadline of May 1. Additional program requirements include an interview, mandatory orientation, and completion of employee health screenings.
Last year’s Volunteens collectively contributed 3,025 hours of service, making a meaningful impact on staff, visitors, and patients alike.
