SGMC Health has named vascular surgeon David Hardy, MD, RPVI, FACS, as its March Health System Hero, recognizing his extraordinary clinical expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment to patients during a recent life‑threatening trauma case.
A critically injured patient arrived at SGMC Health with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, requiring immediate surgical and vascular intervention. The situation was urgent and complex, demanding rapid coordination across specialties and advanced vascular expertise. Although not on call, Dr. Hardy immediately responded to a request for assistance and came in without hesitation to support trauma surgeon Jared Sanders, MD.
Working together under emergent conditions, the physicians performed complex vascular intervention, including arterial coil embolization with multiple coils. During the course of care, the patient required a transfusion of 17 units of blood. Dr. Sanders later shared that Dr. Hardy’s rapid response and collaboration were instrumental in saving the patient’s life.
“This case reflects the very best of our medical staff—physicians who step forward without hesitation, collaborate seamlessly, and place patient care above all else,” said Randy Smith, Vice President of Operations. “Dr. Hardy’s actions embody what it means to be a Health System Hero.”
Dr. Hardy serves as Chief of Vascular Surgery at SGMC Health and is a member of the Medical Staff Executive Committee, where he helps guide clinical excellence and quality across the health system. In addition to his role in acute, lifesaving care, Dr. Hardy has been instrumental in expanding advanced vascular services for the region—bringing new procedures and interventions to SGMC Health that allow patients to receive highly specialized care close to home.
Under his leadership, SGMC Health has strengthened its vascular program through participation in national quality initiatives and achievement of key accreditations, including accreditation of the vascular laboratory. These efforts reflect a sustained commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement, ensuring patients across South Georgia and North Florida have access to high‑level vascular care typically found in larger metropolitan centers.
The Health System Hero recognition celebrates individuals whose actions exemplify SGMC Health’s values of excellence, accountability, respect, and integrity. Dr. Hardy’s willingness to go above and beyond—regardless of call status—stands as a powerful example of physician leadership in action.
