SGMC Health Offering 125 Free Mammograms for Women

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, October 8th, 2024

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a commitment to women's health, SGMC Health’s Breast Center is offering 125 free 3-D mammogram screenings to women who are uninsured and demonstrate a financial need for their annual screening. These screenings will be available at the SGMC Imaging Center in Valdosta and SGMC Health Berrien in Nashville.

These no-cost mammograms are made possible thanks to generous donations to the SGMC Health Foundation. Recipients must complete the online application at sgmc.org/mammo and will then be contacted by a representative from the Breast Center to schedule.

Hilary Gibbs, Vice President and Chief Development Officer, expressed her gratitude to those who have supported this initiative. "We are deeply grateful to our donors whose generosity makes it possible for us to expand and enhance the services we provide. By investing in the health of women in our region, we ensure that they receive the care they deserve close to home, promoting healthier families and stronger communities," she said.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S., with 1 in 8 women expected to develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. However, death rates from breast cancer have steadily declined since 1989, with larger decreases seen in women under 50. These declines are attributed to early detection through screening, increased awareness, and improved treatments.

SGMC Health utilizes Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exams, developed by Hologic, Inc., a leader in women’s health. This advanced breast tomosynthesis technology is clinically proven to increase breast cancer detection rates while reducing the need for follow-up testing.

The free 3-D mammograms will be available to the first 125 eligible women who meet the following criteria:

    • Have not had a mammogram in the past 12 months

    • Are 40 years of age or older

    • Are not currently experiencing breast problems (those experiencing issues should contact their physician)

    • Are uninsured with a demonstrated financial need

    • Are not pregnant

    • Live in one of the following counties: Lowndes, Berrien, Lanier, Cook, Atkinson, or Irwin

To apply, visit sgmc.org/mammo. Physician orders are not required.
