City of Valdosta Encourages Business Owners to Consult Zoning Experts Before Repairing Signs After Hurricane Helene
Friday, October 18th, 2024
As our community works together to recover from Hurricane Helene, the City of Valdosta is providing guidance for local business owners who are assessing damage to their signage. It is important to understand the rules and regulations surrounding sign repairs and replacement to ensure compliance and safety.
Many business owners have asked:
-
"Can we repair our sign?"
-
"Can we build a new one?"
-
"Do we need a permit?"
According to the City’s Land Development Regulations (LDR), any changes to business signs—including altering the size, shape, or location of an existing sign or installing a new one—require a permit. This means that even if you intend to reuse parts of an old sign or move it to a new location, you must first apply for a permit through the City’s Zoning Division.
When is a permit not required?
If your sign is conforming (meaning it has already been issued a permit in the past) and you are only performing minor repairs or maintenance without modifying the sign, you do not need a new permit. Examples of these repairs include replacing a damaged faceplate or changing bulbs. However, if you are unsure whether your repairs fall under this category, it is always best to check with the Zoning Division.
"We understand that business owners want to move quickly to restore their signs after the storm, but it’s important to follow the proper procedures to avoid complications down the line," said Lauren Hurley, Zoning Administrator. "By consulting with our zoning experts before making repairs or changes, business owners can ensure their signs are safe, compliant, and in line with city regulations."
Additionally, business owners should be cautious when dealing with damaged signs, especially if electrical wiring has been exposed due to storm damage. Safety precautions, such as using cones or caution tape around dangerous areas, are recommended to protect both workers and customers.
By consulting with the City’s Zoning Division before making repairs, business owners can avoid potential safety risks and fines. The Zoning Division is available to help ensure that any repairs or replacements meet city regulations. If you have questions or need assistance with the condition of your sign, please contact the Zoning Division at 229-259-3563.
The City of Valdosta is here to support you during the recovery process, and we encourage you to reach out with any concerns.
