Staff Report From Valdosta CEO

Tuesday, April 9th, 2019

The Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund donated money for new birdhouses at Hospice of South Georgia’s hospice house this week.  Funds came from last year’s annual golf tournament, which benefits different organizations throughout the community.  When asked about the significance of the birdhouses to hospice patients, Susan Bowden, executive director of Hospice of South Georgia, said, “Our patients love watching birds gather  around the birdhouses at our hospice house.  It brings them peace, and we are so thankful to Bev Henderson for giving our patients that additional comfort and joy.”

The Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund was set up in 2004 by family and friends in memory of Doug Henderson III, who fought a courageous battle with a rare form of tissue cancer.  After a valiant fight against the disease, Doug passed away on September 6, 2003.   Since the start of this memorial fund, over $375,000 has been donated to local organizations, as well as over 200 scholarships provided to young students.  Some of the organizations that have received funds from the Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund are Hospice of South Georgia & Langdale Hospice House, Lowndes County Partnership for Cancer Fund, LAMP, Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta, and the Saint Francis Center.

The 15th Annual Doug Henderson III Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, April 26, 2019 at the Valdosta Country Club.  Proceeds from the event benefit the Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund, which then donates proceeds of the money to different nonprofit agencies in the community.  Tournament registration is currently open for players, and sponsorship is needed!  For all information regarding team registration, sponsorship, or donations call Leigh Ann Hogan at 229-548-7566 or Bev Henderson at 229-292-3210.
