April 29: Deadline for Board Vacancy Applications. Click here to view 13 ways to be more involved with your local government and community by serving on the city's board, commissions, authorities and advisory committees. Wednesday, April 29, by 5 p.m., is the deadline to get the necessary application forms turned in. April 30: VPD Citizens Police Academy in Week #6. The Valdosta Police Academy will resume Thursday at 6 p.m., for those who have preregistered for the program. Participants meet for eight consecutive Thursday evenings to get a better understanding of the internal workings of a modern day law enforcement agency. The class is free and is one of three citizens information programs designed to engage and educate citizens about their local government. Call Lt. May 1: Combining the Love of Art and Historic Downtown Valdosta. The popular First Friday event on May 1 will feature an Art Walk, from 5 - 8 p.m. As always, First Friday also features live music, dining specials, shopping and more of the fun that the community expects on the first Friday of every month, in beautiful downtown Valdosta. May 2: Farm Days Kicks Off Saturday. The Downtown Valdosta Farm Days kicks off the annual Downtown Valdosta Farm Days on Saturday, May 2. The popular farmers market will take place on the sidewalks around the historic courthouse in downtown Valdosta, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., on the first and third Saturday of every month through September 19, as well as every Saturday during the month of June. May 2: Habitat for Humanity Women Build. "Women Build" is a Habitat for Humanity initiative designed to empower women to break stereotypes and encourages women to participate in the construction of houses for hardworking, low-income families. Since 1998, Women Build has helped to build 2,322 homes for deserving families internationally-and 96 homes were built last year alone by women!
