Valdosta State University’s Regional Center for Continuing Education hosted the 2015 Advanced Placement (AP) Summer Institutes July 6-10.

Committed to the pursuit of enhanced teaching and learning, 14 high school teachers from Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina spent the week learning positive and effective teaching strategies and practical use of materials used in AP English Language and Composition and AP World History courses. They also learned about curriculum updates and revisions on the horizon and received an overview of the latest objectives and exam content.  

For new teachers, the AP Summer Institutes were an opportunity to receive guidance and curriculum development assistance. For experienced teachers, they were an opportunity to update and refine skills.

“The hands-on and group activities throughout the week provided opportunities for teachers to share ideas and experiences and to further develop their courses,” said Dr. Julie Halter, assistant director of VSU’s Regional Center for Continuing Education. “Of particular importance this year was the AP World History class, as the curriculum and test have gone through a revision. There will be select offerings of the new curriculum during the 2015-2016 school year with full implementation the following year.”   

Supported by the James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services, particularly the Center for Gifted Studies, the Regional Center for Continuing Education at VSU has offered the AP Summer Institutes for eight years. The program began in 2008.

Courses offered vary each summer and are taught by College Board-approved consultants.
