Girls on the Run South Georgia Coastal Lowcountry Celebrates Growth

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, November 5th, 2026

Strong looks different on every girl. Sometimes it's the courage to try something new, the determination to overcome a challenge or the confidence to proudly flex her muscles and show the world just how strong she feels.
That confidence is growing across Girls on the Run South Georgia Coastal Lowcountry, which welcomed hundreds of participants this fall. Across its 44-county territory, more girls are discovering their strengths, building friendships and developing life skills that extend far beyond the finish line.

Throughout the season, girls in grades 3–8 learn to manage emotions, build healthy relationships and navigate challenges. Each lesson integrates movement, giving girls opportunities to practice these skills while preparing to complete a 5K. Whether encouraging a teammate or overcoming self-doubt, girls discover that strength is about much more than muscles.

"When a girl proudly shows us her muscles, she's showing us how strong she feels," said Mary Crawford, CEO. "We want every girl to recognize her own strength, believe in her abilities and carry that confidence into whatever comes next."

After weeks of lessons, movement and practice, including a team practice 5K,
participants are preparing to accomplish a goal they set months ago. Their achievements will be celebrated at two upcoming community events:

November 7 | Savannah — Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus
November 14 | Valdosta — Historic Lowndes County Courthouse

These noncompetitive 5K celebrations bring together families, volunteer coaches, running buddies and community supporters to cheer each girl across the finish line.

Since its founding in 2015, the organization has celebrated more than 5,000 program participations, made possible by dedicated coaches, schools, donors and community partners. The public is invited to participate, volunteer or cheer as these girls celebrate just how far they've come.
