Maj. Gen. Steven Behmer, 15th Air Force commander, visited Moody Air Force Base Oct. 29 to hear firsthand accounts from redeploying Airmen assigned to the 23rd Wing and 93rd Air Ground Operations Wing and identify opportunities to improve support throughout the deployment cycle.
During small-group discussions, Airmen shared their experiences and challenges following deployment. Feedback collected by 15th Air Force leadership will be provided to the commander of Air Combat Command for consideration and action.
“It’s an honor to spend time, listen, and learn from Airmen who’ve recently returned home in service to our nation.” Behmer said. “By our warriors sharing their experiences it will help 15th Air Force and Air Combat Command identify strengthens, gaps in training, and the type of support our Airmen need during re-integration with their families and community.”
The visit also recognized Airmen whose efforts supported deployed operations and the return of the 823rd Base Defense Squadron.
During a luncheon recognizing members from the 23 Wing and 93 AGOW, three 93 AGOW Airmen were recognized for their contributions: Senior Airman Delaney Bontrager, 824th Base Defense Squadron; Tech. Sgt. Jacklyn Edgmond, 823rd Base Defense Squadron; and Staff Sgt. Jeremias Smith, 820th Combat Operations Squadron. Their accomplishments included protecting critical assets, sustaining base defense operations, improving weapons security and strengthening mission readiness.
Five additional 93 AGOW members were recognized separately for supporting the 823rd BDS redeployment: Tech. Sgt. Mathew Shaw, 93rd Air Ground Operations Wing; Tech. Sgt. Joseph Mieding, 823rd Base Defense Squadron; Ashley Shapiro, 824th Base Defense Squadron; Dr. Jovanna Gaines, 822nd Base Defense Squadron; and Maj. Matthew Hamrick, 820th Combat Operations Squadron. Their efforts supported the Deployed Transition Center, coordinated redeployment logistics, maintained continuity of care and streamlined post-deployment in-processing to help Airmen reunite with their families.
“Readiness does not end when an Airman returns from deployment,” said Col. Jason Egger, 93rd AGOW commander. “We have a responsibility to ensure our Airmen have the support they need to transition home, reconnect with their families and prepare for what comes next. Taking care of our people and sustaining mission readiness go hand in hand.”
The visit reinforced the importance of listening to redeploying Airmen, recognizing those who support their return and using their feedback to improve care and readiness throughout the deployment cycle.
