Wiregrass Georgia Technical College proudly announces Cameron Lee of Lowndes County as the college’s 2027 Dinah Culbreath Wayne Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) Student of the Year. Lee was recognized during the 30th Annual EAGLE Recognition Reception held Thursday evening, October 15, celebrating three decades of honoring outstanding adult education students and their commitment to educational achievement.
The annual reception, sponsored by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce and First Federal Savings and Loan of Valdosta, brought together college leadership, adult education instructors, community partners, and supporters to recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional perseverance, determination, and dedication to achieving their educational goals.
During the celebration, Lee was announced as the 2027 EAGLE winner, with Amy Crews of Coffee County receiving runner-up honors. Both students shared their personal educational journeys, highlighting the transformative impact of adult education and the opportunities made possible through Wiregrass.
"Celebrating 30 years of the EAGLE program reminds us of the extraordinary determination and resilience of our adult education students," said Wiregrass President DeAnnia Clements. "Cameron Lee represents the very best of what this program stands for: perseverance, personal growth, and the courage to pursue new opportunities. We are incredibly proud of Cameron and each of our finalists for their accomplishments. Their stories are powerful reminders that education has the ability to change lives, strengthen families, and transform communities."
In addition to Lee and Crews, the college recognized six outstanding EAGLE finalists representing communities throughout the Wiregrass service area: Kimberly Dixon and Chloe Stephens of Ben Hill County; Candice Cain of Lanier County; Lachelle Akins of Cook County; Yesenia Cea of Coffee County; and Saige Harrell and Kayla Simpson of Lowndes County.
Each finalist was nominated by an adult education instructor in recognition of their academic progress, leadership potential, and commitment to overcoming challenges while pursuing their educational goals.
"Every student recognized through the EAGLE program has a unique story of determination, sacrifice, and achievement," said Kelly Peacock, Dean of Adult Education Services at Wiregrass. "Our students often balance education with work, family responsibilities, and personal challenges, yet they continue moving forward because they understand the value of investing in their futures. Cameron and all of this year's finalists are shining examples of what is possible when students have the support, resources, and encouragement they need to succeed. We are honored to be part of their journeys."
The EAGLE Award program is a vital component of Georgia's Certified Literate Community Program, an initiative designed to unite community organizations, educational institutions, and literacy providers to maximize existing resources and identify additional opportunities to address local literacy needs.
For 30 years, Wiregrass has celebrated the accomplishments of adult education students through the EAGLE recognition program, showcasing the importance of literacy, lifelong learning, and educational access in building a stronger workforce and community.
Wiregrass Georgia Technical College congratulates Cameron Lee, runner-up Amy Crews, and all 2027 EAGLE finalists. The college also extends its appreciation to the dedicated adult education instructors whose nominations, mentorship, and ongoing support help students achieve their academic and personal goals.
