GDOT Awards Contract to Replace Two Echols Co. Bridges
Tuesday, August 11th, 2026
Georgia Department of Transportation recently awarded a $5.5 million contract for replacement of the Culpepper Road bridges over the Alapahoochee river and overflow in Echols County.
This is a supplemental award to the previously-announced five Southwest Georgia contracts for bids that were received June 12. The addition of the Echols County project brings the total investment in SWGA infrastructure to $19.8 million. Information on previously-announced awards can be found here: https://mailchi.mp/dot.ga.gov/gdot-awards-five-construction-contracts-for-swga. Awards are made to the lowest qualified bidder.
The bridges are located southwest of Statenville. They were built in 1961 and have posted weight restrictions. They were designed using a vehicle standard that is below current standards, which would allow heavier vehicles to use the bridges.
Non-local/through traffic will detour during construction. Information on the start date of construction and detour route will be released in advance.
