From IT Professional to Inspiring Educator: GaTAPP Helps Dr. Matthew North Discover His Calling

Dr. Matthew North did not begin his career intending to become a teacher. In fact, for more than a decade, his professional path was firmly rooted in Information Technology. Yet, looking back, the thread connecting every role he held was not technology itself—but teaching.
Before entering the classroom, North spent 14 years working in IT support, consulting, and systems management, including nearly a decade with the Lowndes County Schools Technology Department. While his responsibilities focused on hardware, networks, and technology systems, much of his work centered on helping others—training teachers to use new technology, supporting instructional initiatives, and leading professional development during some of the district's earliest Google Apps for Education and one-to-one Chromebook rollouts. Over time, he realized the moments he found most rewarding were not solving technical problems, but helping people learn.
That realization became even clearer during visits to the engineering lab at Lowndes High School, where educator John Newton was leading projects involving laser engraving and Chromebook branding. As North spent time in the lab, he found himself increasingly drawn to the instructional side of education. When Newton later announced plans to move into administration, he encouraged North to consider stepping into the classroom. It was a leap of faith—but one that ultimately led him to Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and the Georgia Teacher Academy for Preparation and Pedagogy (GaTAPP).
For North, GaTAPP was more than a certification pathway—it was the bridge that transformed industry experience into effective classroom teaching. As an alternative-route educator, he needed a program that valued his professional background while equipping him with the instructional skills necessary to succeed. Through classroom observations, mentoring, coaching, and practical training, he learned how to design engaging lessons, assess student learning, manage a classroom, and adapt when lessons didn't go as planned. The experience gave him confidence not only in what he taught, but in how he taught it.
Central to that experience were mentors Rene Mason (Former GaTAPP Director) and Patty Hancock (Current GaTAPP Program Specialist), who helped shape North's philosophy of teaching and leadership. Through thoughtful feedback, reflection, and honest conversations about the realities of education, they reinforced that effective teaching is not about perfection—it is about continual growth. Their influence extended well beyond certification and continues to guide his approach to instruction, mentorship, and leadership today.
Since completing GaTAPP in 2016, North's teaching career has continued to flourish. He currently serves as an Engineering and Technology Instructor at Lowndes High School, where he teaches multiple engineering courses and advises both the Technology Student Association (TSA) and VEX Robotics. His classroom emphasizes project-based learning, real-world problem solving, and student ownership—an approach shaped by both his industry experience and the instructional foundation he gained through GaTAPP.
For North, the greatest rewards of teaching often come years after students leave his classroom. While students may gain technical knowledge through engineering projects, he believes the more lasting impact comes from helping them discover confidence in themselves and their abilities. Former students frequently reconnect to share how experiences in his classroom influenced their college choices, careers, or personal growth. Those conversations continue to remind him that education is about much more than content—it is about helping students discover what they are capable of becoming.
North's commitment to education extends well beyond his own classroom. He has earned a Master's, Specialist, and Doctorate in Adult and Career Education from Valdosta State University, with research focused on student leadership and self-directed learning in Career and Technical Student Organizations. He also serves in statewide leadership roles as President of the Georgia Engineering & Technology Educators Division and President of the Georgia TSA Board of Directors, helping shape professional development and opportunities for educators and students across Georgia.
Despite these accomplishments, North remains closely connected to the program that launched his teaching career. He continues to serve as a GaTAPP consultant, supporting new cohorts of educators as they transition into the profession. He believes alternative-route teachers bring valuable real-world experience into the classroom, and when paired with strong mentoring and instructional preparation, they become highly effective educators.
Reflecting on his journey, North credits GaTAPP with shaping not only his career, but his perspective on education itself. What began as a career change became a calling—one grounded in mentorship, reflection, and a belief that great educators can come from many different paths when given the right support.
When asked what he would say to himself on his first day in the program, North reflects, "If I could go back to my first day of GaTAPP, I would encourage myself to keep students at the center of every decision. Stay committed to that mindset, even when easier options exist, because it will become the foundation for how authentic learning experiences and support are built."
