Wiregrass Concludes Successful “Beats and Bytes” Music Camp, Introducing Youth to Coding Through Music
Friday, June 12th, 2026
Wiregrass recently wrapped up another exciting and innovative summer
experience with its Beats and Bytes Music Camp, where students explored the world of computer programming through music creation using EarSketch. Throughout the camp, students learned coding concepts while building original beats, remixing music, and discovering how creativity and technology work together.
EarSketch is a free, browser-based educational platform developed by researchers and educators at Georgia Tech that combines coding, music technology, and composition to teach computer science concepts through creativity. Students use Python or JavaScript to create music while learning foundational programming skills in an engaging, hands-on environment. EarSketch was developed through Georgia Tech’s music technology and educational initiatives to make computer science more accessible and engaging for students from all backgrounds.
During the camp, students quickly learned that coding is more than numbers and complicated commands—it is another way to communicate and create. Through hands-on activities, students wrote code that controlled sounds, rhythms, and effects while learning core programming concepts such as loops, variables, and sequencing.
One student reflected on their experience saying:
“At first this seemed hard and confusing, but once Mr. Michael explained how coding was a language it became easier. I totally think anyone can learn to code.”- Mackenzie Gaskin Michael Fleming, Director of Marketing and leader for the program, emphasized the importance of connecting technology to student interests.
“One of the biggest goals of this camp was showing students that coding doesn’t have to be scary. When students realized coding could create beats, tell stories, and become a creative outlet, everything changed. Watching students go from nervous to confident in just a few days was incredible.”
Chanel Randolph, Educational Outreach Project Manager, highlighted the broader impact of exposing students to emerging technologies early.
“Programs like Beats and Bytes create opportunities for students to explore technology in ways that feel exciting and relevant to them. By combining music and coding, we are helping students build confidence, problem-solving skills, and awareness of career pathways they may not have considered before.”
The camp focused not only on technical skills but also on confidence building, problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. Students spent time experimenting with sounds, sharing projects with peers, and turning lines of code into music they could hear and enjoy.
“Beats and Bytes” highlights Wiregrass’ commitment to exposing students to innovative career pathways and emerging technologies while making learning interactive and fun. By blending music production with computer science, the camp gave students a unique opportunity to see coding in a completely different way—one beat at a time.
For many students, the experience transformed coding from something intimidating into something creative, accessible, and exciting. EarSketch has been used by students across all 50 states and more than 100 countries, demonstrating how music can be a powerful entry point into computer science education.
