SGMC Health Welcomes Barry Fleming as Director of Main Emergency Department

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, June 22nd, 2026

SGMC Health welcomes Barry Fleming RN, as Director of the Emergency Department at SGMC Health Main. In this role, he will provide leadership and oversight of Emergency Department operations, supporting high-quality, timely care for patients across the region.

Through his leadership, Fleming will help guide clinical teams and strengthen day-to-day operations within the department. He is focused on enhancing efficiency, supporting staff, and elevating the quality of care delivered to patients in emergency and acute care settings. His leadership also comes at an important time for the organization, as SGMC Health continues its main campus expansion, including a new Emergency Department set to open in January 2027.

Designed to enhance access, improve patient flow, and elevate the overall care experience, the new Main Emergency Department will expand the health system’s ability to manage a broad spectrum of medical emergencies. The space will include enhanced fast track services for lower-acuity patients, a dedicated results waiting area to improve throughput, and larger treatment rooms designed to support advanced care delivery. Expanded trauma capabilities will support the organization’s Level III Trauma Center designation, strengthening its ability to care for more complex injuries with rapid response and coordinated expertise.

The new facility will also feature a dedicated behavioral health and crisis unit, providing a safer, more appropriate environment for patients in need of specialized care. In addition, an observation unit will offer short-term monitoring spaces to help reduce Emergency Department crowding and improve overall efficiency.

Fleming brings more than 24 years of healthcare experience to SGMC Health, including 14 years in director-level roles. Throughout his career, he has led emergency department operations across complex health systems, driving improvements in patient flow, team performance, and the overall patient experience. His background reflects a strong commitment to supporting frontline staff while advancing operational excellence and high-quality care delivery.

“I am honored to join the SGMC Health team and look forward to supporting our staff while continuing to advance high-quality care for the community,” Fleming said.

Outside of work, Fleming has been married to his wife, Sheila, for 34 years. He has two children, Monica and Chase, and a thirteen-year-old grandson, Parker.

SGMC Health prioritizes a supportive and forward-thinking environment where employees can thrive, grow professionally, and contribute to meaningful work.
