Wiregrass Georgia Technical College proudly honored the life and legacy of former President James A. Bridges during a recent Celebration of Life event held in partnership with the Bridges family and several former colleagues and close friends, recognizing his decades of leadership and lasting impact on technical education and workforce development in South Georgia.

Bridges served as president of Valdosta Technical College from 1984 to 2006, leading the institution through significant growth and transformation. A champion for workforce readiness and a strong advocate for the value of work ethic, his influence extended far beyond campus—helping shape educational practices across the state of Georgia and beyond.

As part of the tribute, Wiregrass Georgia Technical College awarded the inaugural James A. Bridges Scholarship in the amount of $500 to Nicholas Taylor, an Automotive Technology student. Taylor was selected for his dedication, work ethic, and commitment to his field—qualities that reflect the values Bridges instilled throughout his career.

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College President DeAnnia Clements shared, “James A. Bridges believed deeply in the power of education and the importance of a strong work ethic. It is an honor to celebrate his legacy in a way that continues to impact our students for generations to come.”

In addition to the scholarship presentation, the college unveiled permanent memorials to honor Bridges’ legacy. A commemorative bench has been placed outside of Morris Hall, offering a space for reflection on the campus he helped shape. A personalized brick bearing his name has also been installed near the college’s iconic Wiregrass fountain, ensuring his contributions remain a visible and lasting part of the campus landscape.

“This scholarship represents more than financial support—it reflects Mr. Bridges’ lifelong commitment to opportunity, access, and student success,” said Will Bostelman, Executive Director of Fundraising. “We are proud to help carry that vision forward.”

The Celebration of Life brought together family, friends, former colleagues, and community members to remember Bridges’ leadership, mentorship, and unwavering belief in the power of education to change lives.

Through these tributes, Wiregrass Georgia Technical College honors the lasting impact of James A. Bridges—a legacy rooted in hard work, opportunity, and a belief in the power of education.
