SGMC Health Names Jones Director of Patient Support & Transportation Services

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, May 4th, 2026

SGMC Health has named John Jones as Director of Patient Support and Transportation Services, a system‑wide leadership role focused on strengthening patient safety, care coordination, and essential non‑clinical services that support the delivery of high‑quality care across all campuses.

In this new role, Jones oversees SGMC Health’s patient transportation and patient support services teams. These two critical functions influence patient safety, clinical efficiency, and the overall patient experience at every point of care.

Patient support services provide dedicated, trained staff—often referred to as patient safety attendants—who offer close, continuous monitoring for patients at risk of falls, injury, or harm. These team members serve as an added layer of safety, supporting nursing staff by maintaining constant presence, promptly reporting changes in patient condition, and helping reduce preventable safety events. Strong patient observation programs are recognized nationally as an important component of patient safety, regulatory compliance, and workforce support within acute‑care hospitals.

Patient transportation services play an equally vital role in hospital operations by ensuring patients are moved safely, respectfully, and efficiently throughout the facility. Transporters assist patients by wheelchair or stretcher between patient rooms, diagnostic and imaging areas, procedural spaces, and discharge locations. By standardizing and elevating this service, hospitals are able to improve patient flow, reduce delays in care, and allow clinical staff to focus more time at the bedside.

The creation of the Patient Support & Transportation Services Department reflects SGMC Health’s commitment to elevating these services beyond basic logistics—establishing clear leadership, consistent training expectations, and closer alignment with clinical teams to improve safety, efficiency, and the patient experience throughout the care journey.

Jones brings more than 30 years of experience in hospitality and food service management to the role, along with a strong background in service excellence, team leadership, and operational coordination. He joined SGMC Health in 2021 through Morrison Health Care, the organization’s contracted food and nutrition services provider, and most recently served as Retail and Catering Manager. In that role, he supported daily operations across multiple dining venues while collaborating closely with clinical leaders and hospital leadership to meet operational and service standards.

“Stepping into a role that directly supports patient safety and care delivery is extremely rewarding,” Jones said. “These teams have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in how patients experience care every day, and I look forward to building strong partnerships that support safety, efficiency, and compassionate service.”

Jones and his wife, Angie, have four children and three grandchildren.
