SGMC Health is pleased to welcome John Thompson, MD, a board-certified Pediatric Hospitalist, to its team at SGMC Health Main. Dr. Thompson brings a passion for caring for children and a commitment to providing exceptional hospital-based care.

Dr. Thompson specializes in treating common pediatric conditions in a hospital setting, such as asthma, bronchiolitis, infections, injuries, and more. His philosophy of care emphasizes compassion and communication, ensuring that families feel supported throughout their child’s hospital stay.

"I take the time to understand both the child’s and family’s concerns, creating an environment where they feel heard and cared for," said Dr. Thompson. "My goal is to keep children comfortable, provide excellent care, and help families return home safely and quickly."

Dr. Thompson earned his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia. He chose pediatrics and hospital medicine because of the opportunity to manage complex cases and make an immediate impact on children’s health. For him, the most rewarding part of his work is seeing children leave the hospital healthy and happy.

"Dr. Thompson’s arrival further strengthens SGMC Health’s commitment to advancing pediatric care in South Georgia—not only by expanding expert hospital-based services, but also by deepening our collaboration with community-based pediatricians to ensure seamless, coordinated care for every child,” said Pankaj Agrawal, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer.

Originally from the Northeast, Dr. Thompson is excited to settle in South Georgia, drawn by its strong sense of community and SGMC Health’s collaborative environment. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Lorena, and their two-year-old son, Lucas. The family loves outdoor activities and traveling, and at home they speak Portuguese. Dr. Thompson also speaks Italian, Spanish, and a little French.
