SGMC Health Introduces PET Cardiac Stress Testing for More Accurate Heart Diagnostics
Thursday, January 29th, 2026
SGMC Health is expanding its advanced cardiac imaging capabilities with the introduction of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) cardiac stress testing, offering patients faster, more accurate assessments of heart function close to home. This technology represents a major enhancement in the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease.
A cardiac PET stress test visualizes blood flow to the heart using a safe radioactive tracer while a medication is administered to increase blood flow. The new Siemen's state-of-the-art PET scanner captures high‑resolution, 3D images that reveal areas of reduced or blocked circulation, helping physicians identify narrowings or blockages in the coronary arteries with exceptional clarity.
For patients with plaque buildup or suspected heart vessel blockages, PET imaging provides greater diagnostic precision to allow cardiologists to see how much blood flow is restricted.
Compared to a traditional nuclear stress test, cardiac PET offers several key advantages:
-
Superior image resolution for more accurate diagnosis
-
Measurable blood flow, enabling early detection of coronary artery disease
-
Lower radiation exposure, improving safety for patients
-
Shorter scan times, making the experience more comfortable and accessible
“Cardiac PET imaging is one of the most powerful tools we have for identifying heart disease early and accurately,” said Arleen Ramirez, MD, General Cardiologist with subspecialty training in cardiovascular imaging. “For our patients, it means clearer answers, faster results, and more personalized treatment plans—all without having to travel out of the region. This is a tremendous step forward for heart care in our community.”
With the addition of PET cardiac stress testing, SGMC Health continues its commitment to providing state‑of‑the‑art cardiovascular care, ensuring patients have access to leading diagnostic technology right here in South Georgia.
SGMC Health stands as the region’s only Level I Emergency Cardiac Care Center and the sole hospital in South Georgia offering an open-heart surgery program, a dedicated structural heart center, and a comprehensive cardiac electrophysiology program. The health system provides a complete continuum of cardiovascular services—from urgent interventions to long-term management of chronic heart conditions—focused on both cutting-edge technology and exceptional patient outcomes.
