Greater Valdosta United Way Steps Up During Government Shutdown

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Friday, November 7th, 2025

As the federal government shutdown continues to impact families across South Georgia, Greater Valdosta United Way (GVUW) is stepping up to provide critical emergency funding to local partners who are helping to meet basic needs throughout their region.  GVUW has distributed $15,000 in emergency food assistance to organizations serving residents in eight of its eleven counties, ensuring that food, shelter, and essential resources remain available during this challenging time. The funding supports community partners responding to a significant increase in requests for assistance, particularly from senior citizens.

According to GVUW President and CEO Michael Smith, the organization recognized the urgent need to act quickly. “Our community depends on these frontline agencies, and when a crisis like this hits, we have to make sure no one falls through the cracks,” Smith said. “We are seeing a drastic rise in calls for help, and this funding allows our partners to continue serving those most affected.”

This emergency funding effort was made possible in part through a $6,000 contribution from GAF, a community partner. The remaining funds were provided through GVUW’s United We Thrive 2026 Campaign, which supports critical services across South Georgia.

The recipients of the emergency funds were identified in collaboration with Second Harvest of South Georgia and include:

· LAMP (Lowndes Associated Ministries to People) – $2,000

· The Salvation Army of Valdosta – $2,000

· VSU Blazer Pantry – $1,000

· The Salvation Army of Ware County – $1,000

· Family Connection in Bacon, Lanier, and Brooks Counties – $1,000 each

· The Caring Place (Berrien County) – $1,000

· Jesus and Jam (Clinch County) – $1,000

· Second Harvest of South Georgia – $2,000

Greater Valdosta United Way would like to extend sincere thanks to its Executive Board of Directors for approving this emergency funding. Their leadership and commitment to the community allowed GVUW to respond quickly during a time of urgent need, demonstrating the impact of strong governance in supporting South Georgia families.

Smith emphasized the importance of collaboration during times of crisis, noting that “when uncertainty strikes, South Georgia comes together. We are grateful for every partner and donor who helps meet needs and bring hope to our neighbors. Together, we are proving that United is the Way.”
