SGMC Health Welcomes Cardiothoracic Surgeon Guilherme C. De Oliveira, MD
Thursday, August 21st, 2025
SGMC Health is pleased to welcome Guilherme C. De Oliveira, MD, a highly skilled cardiothoracic surgeon, to its growing team of specialists. Dr. Oliveira will be seeing patients at SGMC Cardiothoracic Surgery, located at 2409 N Patterson St, Suite 230, in Valdosta.
Dr. Oliveira brings a wealth of expertise in Cardiothoracic Surgery, with a focus on treating coronary artery disease, valve disorders, and arrhythmias. He also performs advanced Thoracic Surgery, including robotic procedures for lung nodules, lung cancer, first rib resection, and pleural diseases. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Oliveira’s journey into medicine began early, inspired by the dedication of his parents—his father, an orthopedic surgeon, and his mother, a nurse and physical therapist—and further shaped by mentorship from renowned cardiac surgeons Dr. Francisco Costa, Dr. RJ Cusimano, and Dr. Tirone David. His fascination with the heart’s complexity led him to train at world-class institutions across the United States, Canada, and Europe, where he honed both his surgical expertise and his deeply personal, compassionate approach to patient care.
“You should treat your patients the way you want your parents or loved ones to be treated,” he says. Dr. Oliveira prioritizes building strong relationships with his patients and their families, fostering trust and respect to achieve the best outcomes possible. Inspired by his training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, he lives by the motto: “The needs of the patient come first.”
He earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Paraná in Curitiba, Brazil. He then joined the military as a physician before moving to the US, where he completed his internship in General Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, followed by a General Surgery residency at the University of North Carolina. He concluded with a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery from the University of Utah.
Dr. Oliveira chose SGMC Health for its strong sense of community, organizational excellence, and potential for growth. Having previously worked with Colby Ruiz, MD, of SGMC Health’s Vascular Surgery team, he felt confident that SGMC Health was the right place to continue his career.
Dr. Oliveira and his wife, Emily, are excited to make Valdosta their home. “We’re looking forward to joining a welcoming community and creating roots for our family,” he says. The couple recently married and are eager to explore South Georgia’s charm and proximity to family and travel opportunities.
"You may call it fate," he adds, "but my family is originally from Valle D’Aosta, a region in Italy bordering France and Switzerland, so moving to Valdosta feels a bit like coming ‘home’.”
Outside of work, Dr. Oliveira enjoys tennis, soccer, and snowboarding, and hopes to learn golf soon. He also loves traveling and spending time with friends and family.
