SGMC Health is proud to announce Davis Lester, MD and the Pediatric Team, as the latest recipients of the health system's Safe Care Award. Their extraordinary compassion, persistence, and unwavering dedication to patient advocacy played a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of a vulnerable young patient.

According to the nomination, emergency physician Dr. Lester and the Pediatric team went far beyond the standard of care to ensure the child received the support, protection, and resources desperately needed. Through tireless coordination with multiple agencies and departments, the team worked together to advocate for the patient’s safety and long-term well-being.

In addition to medical care, team members extended acts of kindness that brought comfort and dignity to the patient during a traumatic time. Their actions not only exemplified clinical excellence but also demonstrated the power of compassion and humanity in healthcare.

The Safe Care Award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond in advancing SGMC Health’s culture of safety and excellence. As the organization continues its journey to becoming a High Reliability Organization (HRO), this recognition underscores the importance of vigilance, teamwork, and adherence to best practices in patient care.

Hospital Board member and Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee Chair Brian Griner, MD, commended Dr. Lester for his thoroughness and persistence to ensure this patient not only received appropriate health care, but also the resources necessary to support the child well into the future.  

Cherise Giddens, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, praised nursing leaders Connie Vonier and Teresa Morris who accepted the award on behalf of the pediatric department stating that this team is consistently known for their immense display of empathy and dedication to delivering remarkable care.
