Moody AFB Plans Aircraft Evacuation, Base Closures Ahead of Tropical Storm Helene
Thursday, September 26th, 2024
Moody Air Force Base leadership has declared HURCON 3, which means Moody is within 48 hours of inclement weather associated with Tropical Storm Helene. The current forecast shows impacts from Helene will affect the local area beginning Thursday at 8 p.m. through Friday at 5 a.m., subject to change as information about the storm’s path and intensity develops.
Leadership plans to evacuate aircraft to another military installation prior to Helene’s impact to avoid potential damage due to high-speed winds, localized flooding and heavy rain.
Starting 6 p.m. Wednesday, the main gate on Davidson Rd. will be closed until further notice. The North Gate on Mitchell Blvd. will remain open until 2 a.m. on Thursday, at which point will only be accessible by mission essential personnel (Hurricane Rideout Team) until further notice.
The Exchange and Commissary will be closed Thursday and Friday until further notice. The Moody AFB Express will be open until noon on Thursday and remain closed until further notice.
The dining facility will be open during normal hours Tuesday and Wednesday; however, there will be no midnight meal on Wednesday. Breakfast hours and MRE pick-up will be 6 to 8 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Following breakfast hours on Thursday, the dining facility will close until further notice.
Moody AFB leadership continues to encourage Airmen and families to implement precautionary measures, prepare their homes and secure any outdoor items that could become hazardous due to the inclement weather and high winds.
Updates will be posted to the Moody AFB Facebook site, but everyone is encouraged to continue to monitor local radio, TV and weather sites for the latest Tropical Storm Helene information.
