The City of Valdosta proudly recognizes Traffic Signal Technicians Grady Padgett, Thomas Keen, and Danny Rickman as the September 2024 Employees of the Month.

Mayor Scott James Matheson presented the Employee of the Month award at the Valdosta City Council’s regular meeting on Thursday, Sept. 19, in recognition of their swift and heroic actions following a traffic incident on Aug. 16. He was joined by City Engineer Benjamin O’Dowd, Traffic Manager Bo Bewley, and Signs and Signals Supervisor Ron Williams.

During the presentation, Bewley recounted the incident to attendees, highlighting how Padgett, Keen, and Rickman reacted swiftly during the emergency.

At approximately 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 16, the technicians were repairing a traffic signal at the Inner Perimeter Road and Hill Avenue intersection when a semi-truck overturned while attempting a left turn. The truck came to rest in the middle of the intersection, creating a hazardous situation for the driver and other vehicles.

Without hesitation, Padgett, Keen, and Rickman rushed to assist the driver, ensured his safety, and immediately called 911 to report the accident. After first responders arrived, the technicians quickly established a safe work zone, rerouting traffic to prevent further incidents and securing the intersection.

“These technicians exemplify the best qualities of public service,” Bewley said. “Their quick thinking and ability to manage a dangerous situation while keeping the public safe make me extremely proud of our team.”

The City of Valdosta commends Grady Padgett, Thomas Keen, and Danny Rickman for their professionalism, rapid response, and dedication to public safety. Their actions highlight the commitment of city employees to the community’s well-being.
