SGMC Health has received the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines award for excellence in stroke treatment for the eleventh consecutive year. SGMC Health is home to the area's only accredited primary stroke center and has been honored with the Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll recognition. 

The Target: Type 2 Diabetes™ Honor Roll award ensures that patients with Type 2 diabetes, who are at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to stroke.  

To achieve and maintain this level of excellence, SGMC Health adheres to the latest research-based guidelines for stroke treatment, resulting in more lives saved, shorter recovery times, and fewer hospital readmissions.  

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. It occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot or bursts, leading to brain cell death. Early detection and treatment are crucial for improving survival rates, minimizing disability, and accelerating recovery.  

Get With The Guidelines leverages the expertise of the American Heart and Stroke Associations to help hospitals nationwide align patient care with the latest evidence and research.  

SGMC Health Stroke Coordinator Jan Brasher emphasized the importance of community awareness of stroke signs and symptoms to enhance outcomes. "Time is critical when identifying and treating a stroke. Calling 911 allows our Emergency Medical Services teams to activate early interventions and expedite care. An easy way to remember the signs of a stroke is the acronym B.E.F.A.S.T."
