AshBritt Foundation Rebuilds Gym Destroyed by Hurricane Idalia for Boys and Girls Clubs of Valdosta
Monday, December 18th, 2023
n August, Hurricane Idalia devastated South Georgia, causing damage throughout the region. Along with hundreds of square miles of devastation, the basketball gym of the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta was destroyed when life-threatening flood waters poured into the gym, rendering the floor unusable by warping the wood floors and causing a health risk of mold growth. This holiday season, the AshBritt Foundation has stepped in with a generous donation of $53,000 to repair the Club’s gym.
“The AshBritt Foundation Gym” will be completed over winter break with a grand opening celebration scheduled for the beginning of next year.
AshBritt team members had the opportunity to travel to Lowndes County Tuesday, December 12, 2023, to announce this exciting partnership in front of the Lowndes County Commision.
AshBritt executives were also proud to stop by the Greater Valdosta United Way and present another contribution to United Way CEO Michael Smith. They were joined by Valdosta Mayor Scott Matheson and community leaders from the Valdosta Police Department, Valdosta Fire Department, and Valdosta Public Works Department. The AshBritt team was especially honored when Mayor Matheson made a surprise proclamation: December 12th would be “AshBritt Day” in the City of Valdosta.
AshBritt is currently overseeing disaster debris removal operations in the cities of Valdosta, Dasher, and Remerton, as well as Lowndes County, Georgia. These operations encompass the collection of debris from rights-of-way (ROW) and the removal of hazardous trees and limbs. To date, AshBritt has successfully cleared approximately 1,300,000 cubic yards of debris.
While this marks a great step in progress in the community, there is still much work to be done, and AshBritt plans to be a large part of it.
“In the wake of any disaster, AshBritt’s first priority is quickly and efficiently removing debris so that communities can begin to rebuild, but we know that clearing debris is only the beginning of the recovery process,” said Sara Perkins, Vice President at AshBritt. “AshBritt’s work as a community partner does not stop when roads are cleared and debris is hauled away — supporting community initiatives that seek to minimize the devastating effects of natural disasters, especially for vulnerable populations such as children and young adults, is an equally important aspect of recovery. The AshBritt Foundation is proud to partner with the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta to help them rebuild and continue their tremendous work in Lowndes County.”
The Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta provides young people safety, enrichment, and opportunity. The organization has proudly served Lowndes and Brooks Counties for over 75 years, serving more than 1,000 children and teens on a daily basis for afterschool and summer programs.
“Our gymnasium is central to our programming,” said Kristin Hanna, VP of Marketing and Development at the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta. “Not only do 500+ children and teens fill it daily, but the gym hosts our health and career fairs, graduation celebrations, and community events. The AshBritt Foundation’s gift is such a blessing.”
