September Unemployment Rate Drops in Valdosta

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Valdosta recorded an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent in September, down five-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 2.9 percent.
 
 "Georgia reigns as the ultimate destination for business and economic opportunity," said Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson. "However, with recent workforce reductions at Geico, Yellow Freight, and other companies throughout the state, we need to be cognizant of the financial pressures creating some instability within our existing business community. In today's ever-shifting global market, we must remain vigilant and lead with innovation."

The labor force increased in Valdosta by 773 and ended the month with 63,460. That number went up by 953 when compared to September of 2022.

Valdosta finished the month with 61,099 employed residents. That number increased by 1,041 over-the-month and went up by 432 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Valdosta ended September with 57,000 jobs. That number increased by 400 from August to September and went up by 300 when compared to this time last year.

 In September, initial unemployment claims increased by 205 (79%) in Valdosta. When you compare September 2023 claims to September 2022, claims were up by 237 (104%).
