Community to Celebrate Cancer Survivors with Dinner Event
Friday, June 3rd, 2022
On Friday, June 17, the Pearlman Cancer Center at South Georgia Medical Center and Lowndes County Relay for Life invite cancer survivors and their caregiver to attend a community cancer survivors celebration. Registration is required and can be completed at sgmc.org.
Attendees will enjoy dinner, entertainment, and giveaways, but most importantly the chance to celebrate life with fellow cancer survivors. The celebration provides an opportunity for people living with a history of cancer to connect with each other, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way.
This year's event is made possible by generous donations from local businesses as well as volunteers from both SGMC and Relay for Life.
According to Pearlman Cancer Center Administrative Director Emily Wetherington, "For people who have battled cancer, their challenges do not end when their treatment ends. Moving forward as a survivor is accompanied by many new struggles. As cancer survivors navigate new challenges, many of the support systems they had throughout treatment change, making adjusting to their new normal exceptionally challenging and isolating."
Thanks to dedicated research teams, cancer survivor rates are continuing to increase. Many types of cancers are considered extremely treatable.
SGMC officials expressed the importance of regular screenings to continue this upwards trend. Abiding by the cancer screening guidelines assists in early detection, ultimately increasing one’s chance of survival.
