The Valdosta Fire Department Implements New Fall Prevention Program
Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021
The Valdosta Fire Department recently established a new initiative within their Community Risk Reduction (CRRP) Program that aids in its goal to take preventative action and reduce hazards around the city. Under this program falls a subsequent list of amenities, with the most recent addition being a Fall Prevention Program.
When establishing the CRRP, Fire Chief Brian Boutwell compiled research on fall prevention statistics and found that most fall-related injuries occur in the home. "I collected the data based on our departments' statistics as well that of South Georgia Medical Center EMS. Through that research, we identified an alarming number of falls among our residents who are 65 years and older," said Chief Boutwell. "With most of these falls occurring in the home,” he thought, "what better way to reduce that risk than for us to offer a service to survey houses and help identify potential trip hazards."
Through the Fall Prevention Program, residents can contact the Fire Department to request an appointment for a home survey. A trained member of VFD will assess the potential fall risks and recommend simple and effective home modifications to prevent them from occurring. Anyone can call and request an appointment for not only themselves but a loved one so long as the resident has given their consent to participate. VFD will not enter any home without expressed permission from the owner as the program is voluntary.
Though this issue significantly affects the senior population, this program can be utilized by any city resident. "If you have lived in the same place for a long time, it can be easy to become accustomed to the setup of our homes and not be able to identify potential hazards. VFD can come in and help identify hazards in the home and make for a safer environment," said Chief Boutwell.
Some of the most common trip hazards seen by Fire Department personnel are area rugs in front of or near furniture or runners on the floor. Chief Boutwell also encourages residents to be mindful when decorating their homes this holiday season as cords are a significant tripping hazard. It is essential to utilize the nearest outlet and avoid covering cords with a rug.
