Virtual classrooms and learning opportunities are becoming more prevalent for students due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moody Youth Programs has dedicated computer labs to military children, ages 5 to 18, to attend their virtual classes at the Youth Center.

“The children will bring their headphones and Chromebooks, provided by the county and city schools,” said Julia Stokes, 23d Force Support Squadron Moody Youth Programs director. “We provide the Wi-Fi, space and computers in case something happens to their Chromebook.”

Throughout the day, the Youth Center provides meals and staff support for the children as they progress through their virtual curriculum.

“Moody Youth Programs has provided a great opportunity for myself, as a single active-duty military parent,” said Tech. Sgt. Jamileth Spinner, 23d Maintenance Squadron munitions systems technician. “The virtual learning environment that is being provided is a safe place, where I know my child is receiving proper care.”

In addition to providing resources and personnel, the Youth Center is taking precautions to comply with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance. These precautions include deep cleaning the computer labs, mandatory mask wear and social distancing.

“Parents love that we provide curbside service,” said Stokes. “When kids are dropped off in the morning, we have a staff member who meets them [in the parking lot] to take their temperatures and ask questions regarding COVID-19 exposure. In the afternoon, parents can call ahead for pickup, and we sign them out and watch them walk to their parents’ vehicles.”

Team Moody parents have the option to utilize the Youth Programs’ services so they can accomplish the mission while their kids complete their schoolwork.

“If this opportunity did not become available, my unit would have had to [make adjustments] that would have tilted the balance of the workload and manning in my work center,” said Spinner. “Having a childcare facility that acts as that ‘village to raise a child’ places my mind at ease and allows me to focus on the mission.”
