YEA! Students Receive Business Advice from Local Professionals
Staff Report From Valdosta CEO
Friday, December 21st, 2018
Local students from the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) were introduced to Paul Hamilton, with the Law Office of Paul W. Hamilton, who spoke to the students regarding the legal issues to consider when starting a small business. Hamilton explained the legal implications on a variety of issues from business names to structure and operations.
“YEA is an extraordinary program,” Hamilton said. “Talking with these young students about business and legal issues is always inspiring to me. It gives me hope for the future knowing there are young, motivated entrepreneurs who are excited about starting new businesses.”
Ben Blanton, with Blanton & Griffin Insurance Agency, spoke to the students about the importance of insurance and risk management when starting a small business. Blanton explained the formal process an organization uses to establish risk management goals and objectives, as well as how to identify and analyze risks and liabilities. The students also learned that in order to avoid health and legal liability, risk management procedures need to be put in place before starting any new enterprise or social movement.
“The students’ ambitions at such a young age are wonderful,” Blanton said. “This class helps them develop high expectations for their future. This belief and spirit will go a long way in their life journey. I have enjoyed being a part of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy.”
Both Hamilton and Blanton have volunteered to be YEA! guest speakers for the past two years. Blanton & Griffin Insurance Agency is also a YEA! Student Sponsor, which is a sponsorship level that provides a partial scholarship toward an individual student’s program tuition.
Jean Gibson, from Gibson Tax Service, was the final guest speaker of the evening. She explained to the class the financial considerations in starting a small business. Her presentation included the principles of budgeting, financing, and taxes, while also highlighting the role of an accountant, and what small-business owners should know about accounting services.
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is a national program licensed by the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce, and its 2018-2019 Superstar Sponsor is Southwest Georgia Bank. As part of YEA!, students are introduced to all facets of the business world such as advertising, insurance, graphic design, and web development. During the course of this year’s YEA! program, each of the 11 students will have the opportunity to launch their own business. Business concepts include:
Event Videography
Personalized, Motivational Merchandise
Real Estate Drone Photography
Wearable Band Marching Technique Devices
Online Piano Tutorial Service
YEA! relies on the generosity of community members and sponsors, who identify with entrepreneurship and want to help pave the way for future business leaders. During the 20-week program, local businesses have an opportunity to become involved with YEA! at various levels. Students work in close cooperation with business and community leaders, and educators who use their experiences to demonstrate how to transform ideas into tangible enterprises that create economic and social value.
