Staff Report From Valdosta CEO
Tuesday, December 18th, 2018
Are you looking for something educational (and free) for the kids to do over the holiday break? BridgeBuilder Education & Investments will host three computer coding sessions called “Code For The Holidays” at the Willis L. Miller Library. The sessions are designed for beginners of all ages and will present an easy way for participants to start coding in the classroom or at home. The session dates and times are as follows:
December 20, 2018 - 1:15 pm to 3:00 pm
December 27, 2018 -11:15 am to 1:00 pm
January 3, 2018 - 5:15 pm to 7:00 pm
According to organizers, while many students often know how to use technology, rarely do they understand how it works. In addition, coding has increasingly become an essential skill that helps kids succeed in a digital world. “Code For The Holidays” participants will learn to code using visual code blocks that represent real programming concepts. Input/output commands, simple messaging, and conditional loops will be explained and used to build youth confidence in computer science.
“We thought this would be an excellent opportunity for interested families to introduce kids to coding over the break in a way that empowers them while learning. Numerous studies have proven that coding helps to develop logical thinking abilities, develops problem-solving skills and encourages creativity. If we are going to build a competitively skilled workforce, we will have to start providing our kids with digital skills at a young age,” said H. DeWayne Johnson, BridgeBuilder co-founder and Code For The Holidays host.
Registration is free but required to participate due to limited seating with 15 participants per session. To reserve a seat, parents can register online at codefortheholidays.eventbrite.com.
