Lowndes Co: Morven Road Moving for Exit 29 Construction

Staff Report From Valdosta CEO

Monday, June 25th, 2018

Changes are coming that will impact Morven Road traffic and drivers wishing to enter the Big Foot Travel Center at Exit 29 in Hahira.

Right now Morven Road runs alongside Interstate 75 south. A new road has been built west of the existing location. Traffic is scheduled to shift to the new road Tuesday, weather permitting to allow final work to be done.

This is how the realignment will affect drivers:

Morven Road traffic: the existing road will close from SR 122 to east of the Franks Creek Landing subdivision. The new road connects to the existing road near the subdivision.

Travel Center: all existing entrances will be eliminated (two off existing Morven Road and one off SR 122 west). Drivers will reach the Travel Center via a driveway built off the new road.

The realignment is necessary because the I-75 south entrance ramp is going to be moved to the west as part of the interchange reconstruction. Reames and Son Construction Co. Inc. of Valdosta is also reconstructing Exit 22 near Valdosta.

The Georgia Department of Transportation project scheduled to be finished in 2020 will improve traffic flow and capacity and increase visibility for drivers exiting the ramps. The interchange bridges were built in 1960 and the design is outdated for current and projected traffic.
