Lowndes County: Deadline Extended to Comment on Interstate 75 Projects

Staff Report From Valdosta CEO

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017

Due to Tropical Storm Irma, the deadline has been extended to submit comments on the reconstruction of Interstate 75 interchanges at Exits 2 and 11 in Lowndes County.

Comments originally were due by Sept. 21 following a well-attended Georgia Department of Transportation open house Sept. 7 in Lake Park. The deadline has been extended a week to Sept. 28.

Exit 2 is at Lake Park/Bellville Road and Exit 11 is at state Route 31/Madison Highway. The bridges at both locations were built in 1961. Reconstruction is expected to improve the operation of the interchanges and enhance safety.

The Department proposes to end the ramps in roundabouts, which would be a first for Southwest Georgia. In addition, the overpasses would be replaced with longer bridges to accommodate any future widening of I-75. Exit 11, which is currently two bridges, would be a single bridge. A two-lane frontage road would be built on the north and south sides of SR 31 to provide access to businesses.

Comments may be submitted using any of the following methods by Sept. 28:

  • Online at www.dot.ga.gov/PS/Public/PublicOutreach

    • From the menu, select Lowndes County and click Go;

    • Then select I-75 at Exits 2/Bellville and 11/Madison Highway;

    • Click comment and follow the instructions.

  • Mail your comment to Eric Duff, Georgia Department of Transportation, 600 W. Peachtree St., NW, 16th Floor, Atlanta, Ga. 30308.

If you did not get a chance to attend the open house there are two ways to view project displays and plans until Sept. 28. They are available online at the website listed above and at the Georgia DOT district office in Valdosta located at 1411 Madison Highway.
