Aug. 1 | ZBOA Meets
The Valdosta-Lowndes County Zoning Board of Appeals will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, at 2:30 p.m., in City Hall Annex Multi-Purpose Room. The ZBOA hears all variance requests and appeals regarding staff interpretations to the City of Valdosta Zoning Ordinance. Contact the city’s Planning and Zoning Office at 229-259-3563 for details.
Aug. 1 | Deadline to Apply for Citizens Fire Academy
Tuesday, Aug. 1 is the deadline to apply for the 4th Annual Citizens Fire Academy which will educate citizens about the services provided by the Valdosta Fire Department, increase fire and life-safety awareness, and establish a community partnership. The academy will take place each Tuesday night for nine weeks from 6-9 p.m., beginning Aug. 29. The program is limited to 25 participants. Download application and more information.
Aug. 1 | Traveling Photos Displayed at Red Door Records & Cinema
The winning photos in the 2017 Valdosta People’s Choice Photo Contest are now part of a traveling photo display, which will allow a greater number of citizens to appreciate the local art. The photos will be on display from Aug. 1-18 at Red Door Records & Cinema, located at 133 N. Patterson Street, in beautiful downtown Valdosta.
Aug. 1 | National Night Out
The Valdosta Police and Fire Departments will participate in the National Night Out, on Tuesday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 9 p.m., on the Valdosta State University front lawn. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie in an effort to prevent crime. View City Calendar for details.
Aug. 2 | Deadline to Apply for Seven Board Opportunities
Aug. 2 is the deadline for citizens to apply for local board opportunities and thereby participate in accomplishing the business of the city. Currently, the city has seven vacancies for which they are seeking community-minded citizens to apply. Read more.
Aug. 4 | First Friday Featuring Art Walk
The popular First Friday event will take place this Friday, Aug. 4 and will feature live music, dining specials and shopping, beginning at 5 p.m. The event will also feature Art Walk, a special quarterly event that encourages the appreciation of the arts. Enjoy the nightly fun that the community expects on the first Friday of every month in Downtown Valdosta. Aug. 5 | 100 Black Men BBQ
Downtown Valdosta has been the site of the 100 Black Men BBQ each Aug. 5 since 1995, and the event takes place once again this Saturday, Aug. 5, beginning at 9 a.m. Attendees at the cook-off can expect a family-oriented atmosphere, full of food, fun and entertainment.
