Heart of the City Unveiled

Staff Report From Valdosta CEO

Monday, July 24th, 2017

A crowd gathered on the front lawn of Valdosta City Hall on July 20 for the unveiling of a new piece of art.

"Low-Poly Heart," created by artist Matthew Duffy from Washington, D.C., is on loan to the Public Art Advisory Committee for a year. The PAAC selected Valdosta City Hall as the appropriate place to call home for that duration of time.

Duffy combines his art with traditional techniques and technology, such as laser-cutting, 3-D printing, and CAD modeling, with traditional aesthetics and methods of sculpture making. He created this aluminum diamond plated heart, that is virtually indestructible—a symbol of love which can be appreciated by people of all ages. The heart is made up of interconnected metal bands that construct the linear composition,  which represents a community of people connected to each other.

The beautiful art piece greets motorists who travel into the city from the east on Hwy 84 and those who travel north and south on N. Lee Street.  The public is invited to view this art on the front lawn and take photos in front of it.
