Southern Soul Macaroni and Cheese Cook Off Supports Local Homeless Shelter

The Lowndes Associated Ministries to People, Inc. hosted its Inaugural Southern Soul Macaroni and Cheese Cooking Competition on Thursday, November 17th in recognition of National Homeless Awareness Week at the Cotton Corner in downtown Valdosta.  Local restaurants competed for bragging rights of making the best macaroni and cheese. The Salty Snapper, Big Nicks, Flavor of Flames BBQ (Quitman), Jessie’s Restaurant and Catering, Sebastian’s Wings and Friends Grille are showcased their version of the southern comfort food dish.  MaePolly’s presented a festive dessert bar.  Three local celebrity judges, 2016 Valdosta Woman of the Year, Attorney Karla Walker, Brooks County ECHOES 21st CCLC Afterschool Director, Janie Jones and West Corporation ClientTell, Daniel Folsom taste-tested each macaroni and cheese dish and decided that Louise Harden from Big Nicks Restaurant was the winner of the “Foodie” Award. 

Participants at the cook off chose their top macaroni and cheese dish which was given to Mikki Hudson of Jessie’s Restaurant and Catering. There was music and a silent auction which comprised of items from Lowe’s, Georgia Power, Valdosta State University, Pepsi Co., Hunt Industries, Rodan & Fields, ProServe Staffing, and Chicken Salad Chick.  This inaugural event was not only to recognize National Homeless Awareness week but to give local cooks an opportunity to showcase their recipes and give back to the shelter.  Sponsors for the event made it possible were, Harrington Funeral Home and ValdostaSold Realty.
