Oct. 4 | ZBOA Meets
The Valdosta-Lowndes County Zoning Board of Appeals will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, at 2:30 p.m., in City Hall Annex Multi-Purpose Room. The ZBOA hears all variance requests and appeals regarding staff interpretations to the City of Valdosta Zoning Ordinance. Contact the city’s Planning and Zoning Office at 229-259-3563 for details.
 
Oct. 4 | Valdosta City Council Meets for Work Session
The Mayor and City Council meet for a work session on Tuesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m., which allows council members to spend an adequate amount of time discussing agenda items. The meeting is open to the general public and is held in the second floor Council Chambers of City Hall, at 216 E. Central Avenue.
 
Oct. 4 | Week #6 of VFD Citizens Fire Academy
The Valdosta Fire Department Citizens Fire Academy is in week #6 for citizens who are preregistered for the nine-week program. Participants will receive instruction on Personal Protective Equipment and Search & Rescue. Citizens Fire Academy is designed to give a behind-the-scenes look into one of the top ISO-rated fire departments in the state. For information, call 229-333-1835.
 
Oct. 5 | National “Do Something Nice” Day
It’s odd that there has to be a national observance for it. It would be ideal if everyone lived their lives doing nice things on a daily basis and without thinking about it. Nevertheless, Oct. 5 serves as a reminder to us all, that it is easy to get caught up with hectic schedules and fast paced lifestyles. So, let’s try to stop for a moment and do something nice.

The Mayor and City Council will meet this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers. The meeting is open to the general public. View the agenda.
 
Oct. 6 | Week #4 of the VPD Citizens Police Academy
The Citizens Police Academy will meet for week #4 on Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m., to learn about the Bureau of Investigative Services and the Narcotics Division. The goal of the CPA is to give citizens a better understanding of the internal workings of a modern day law enforcement agency and, at the same time, promote a team concept between the VPD and the citizens they serve. The popular First Friday event will take place this Friday, Oct. 7, and will feature live music, dining specials and shopping with downtown merchants, beginning at 6 p.m. The event will also feature the continuation of Dumpster Art on the McKey Street end of Bennie’s Alley, featuring Artist Taylor Brooks. Oct. 8 | City Hosts Affordable Housing Summit and Town Hall Meeting
The City of Valdosta will host the 2016 Affordable Housing Summit and Town Hall Meeting on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Mildred M. Hunter Community Center, located at 509 S. Fry Street. The free event will provide affordable housing information and resources from over 20 agencies and organizations.  Read more.
