VSU Campus Holds National Hunger Awareness Month Event
Staff Report From Valdosta CEO
Friday, September 23rd, 2016
Cantasia, a competitive fantasy-themed event to benefit Second Harvest of South Georgia, will be held Wednesday, September 28, at Valdosta State University.
Student groups will compete for prizes in two categories: structures built out of non-perishable food items and the largest number of individual non-perishable food items. The competition is sponsored by the VSU chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America in conjunction with Southeastern Credit Union’s Fill-a-Truck campaign to feed the hungry of South Georgia.
The individual food items will be used to build the Mountain of Hope on the Mall at VSU, according to PRSSA president Ciara James. “Our campus has the opportunity to make a very real contribution to providing food for people who are in need in South Georgia,” she said.
It takes 20,000 pounds of food to fill one truck, and, if the Fill-a-Truck campaign is successful, two trucks will provide more than 26,000 meals for those in need in our area.
Student groups choosing to build a structure will have from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to complete their creation. Guest judges will select the winners beginning at 3 p.m. Individual food items and cash donations ($1 equals four pounds of food) will be accepted during the construction times. The VSU chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America is part of a national network of more than 11,000 college students interested in public relations and communication careers. It is sponsored by the VSU Communication/Public Relations Program.
