Southeastern CU Kicks Off Third Annual Food Drive

Staff Report From Valdosta CEO

Friday, September 9th, 2016

Southeastern Credit Union has officially kicked off their month-long Fill-a-Truck for Hunger Food Drive benefitting Second Harvest of South Georgia.  September is nationally-recognized as Hunger Action Month, and designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of the issue of food insecurity.  In South Georgia, one in four people struggle with hunger and may not know where they’ll find their next meal.  That number includes one in three children who may not have enough to eat.

The signature event for Hunger Action Month in South Georgia is the third annual Southeastern Credit Union Fill-A-Truck for Hunger campaign.  The organization is challenging the community to raise 20,000 pounds (or the equivalent) in food and funds.  If that goal is met, SCU will donate an additional truckload worth of food.

“Southeastern is proud to help lead the charge in alleviating hunger in South Georgia.  We strongly believe it is our duty to better our community and live out the credit union philosophy of people helping people,” said Mike Gudely, Southeastern CEO.

The support for this year’s campaign has grown through new partnerships and support from local government, organizations and businesses.  Lowndes County and the City of Valdosta have issued a joint proclamation declaring September to be Hunger Action Month.  In addition, Turner Center for the Arts is sponsoring an Empty Bowls fundraiser and Hunger in America photography exhibit to benefit the food bank.

Other Hunger Action Month events include:

  • September 3-5:  Wild Adventures BOGO Admission Days (with canned food donation)
