May 17 | | Recycling 101
Media and citizens who are interested in how recyclables are collected, sorted and disseminated are invited to the city’s recycling compound, located at 1017 Myrtle Street, at 10:30 a.m. Guests will observe the work of the men and women of the Lowndes Advocacy & Resources Center at work at the facility. This event is being held in observance of National Public Works Week.
May 18 | Land Bank Authority Meets
The Land Bank Authority will meet Wednesday, May 18, at 9 a.m., in the Valdosta City Hall Annex Multi-Purpose Room. The purpose of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Land Bank Authority is to foster the public purpose of returning property which is in a non-revenue generating, non-tax producing status to effective utilization status in order to provide housing, new industry and jobs for citizens. May 18 | Public Works Employee Appreciation Luncheon
City of Valdosta Public Works Department employees will be treated to an Employee Appreciation Luncheon, at Mathis Auditorium, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The guest speaker for the event is City Engineer Patrick Collins. This event is being held in observance of National Public Works Week.
May 18 | Goodwill on the Go Career Workshop at City Hall Annex
It’s not too late to sign up for the Job Search workshop being held at the Valdosta City Hall Annex Multi-Purpose Room, on Wednesday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will learn how to create a “To-Do” List after the Job Fair. This workshop is part of Job Connections, the recent partnership between the City of Valdosta and Goodwill Industries to provide more access to job and career information and resources. May 18 | VPD Promotion Ceremony
The Valdosta Police Department will host a Promotions Ceremony at the City Hall Annex Multi-Purpose Room, on May 18, beginning at 3 p.m. The public is invited to this celebration.
May 19 | Adopt-A-Street Campaign
Individuals, families, organizations, businesses, etc., are encouraged to sign up to adopt a city street to prevent local litter and to keep our city beautiful. Information provided by the Public Works Department and Keep Lowndes Valdosta Beautiful will be available at the 1017 Myrtle Street facility, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 19. This activity is being held in observance of National Public Works Week.
May 19 | Valdosta Youth Council Meets
Mayor John Gayle will meet with the Valdosta Youth Council on May 19, at 4 p.m. to elect officers and plan for the 2016-2017 council year. The meeting will take place in the Council Chambers of Valdosta City Hall (located at 216 E. Central Avenue) and is open to the general public. May 19 | Valdosta City Council Meets
A City Council meeting will be held on Thursday, at 5:30 p.m., in the second-floor Valdosta City Hall Council Chambers, located at 216 E. Central Avenue. Among other business, the City will honor the 2016 Preservation Award winners, as part of our city’s observance of National Historic Preservation Month. This meeting is open to the general public. May 19 | Citizens Graduate from Police Academy
A ceremony on Thursday, at 6:30 p.m., at the Valdosta Police Department, will recognized the citizens who have completed the 10-week Citizen’s Police Academy. Over the past several weeks, citizens have gained a better understanding of the internal workings of a modern day law enforcement agency. May 20 | Touch-A-Truck
Students from Valdosta State University’s ENACTUS After-School Program will be captivated by the big city trucks used by Public Works and other departments of the city. The Touch-A-Truck event will take place on the Public Works facility grounds, at 1017 Myrtle Street, from 3-5 p.m. To register an organization to participate in the Touch-A-Truck activity, call 229-259-3597. May 21 | Farm Days in Downtown Valdosta
The Downtown Valdosta Farm Days continues on Saturday, May 21. The popular farmers market takes place on the sidewalks around the historic Lowndes County Courthouse, in downtown Valdosta, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., on selected Saturdays each month through September 17.
