Valdosta Mayor John Gayle and Engineering Director Patrick Collins honored Signal Technician Roger Weaver as the April 2016 Employee of the Month at the April 7 City Council meeting. Weaver received a framed certificate and a check for $200, and his name appears on a plaque displayed in City Hall.
 
Weaver is responsible for installing and maintaining city traffic signals to include control boxes, signal lights, pedestrian walk signals and traffic detection devices. He regularly inspects traffic signal equipment for wear and damage, and he synchronizes signals to provide progressive traffic movement.
 
On a recent Sunday morning, Weaver observed a female citizen whose car had slid into a ditch on a dirt road alongside Highway 84. Weaver immediately stopped to assist and check on her; however, he did not have a chain with him to pull out her vehicle. While Weaver was retrieving a chain from his home, a man who owned a wrecker service also stopped to assist. When Weaver returned with a chain, he and the other man were able to pull the vehicle out of the ditch. Weaver then checked the vehicle for damage and ensured it was safe to drive.
 
Weaver later discovered that the citizen who slid into the ditch is a fellow employee at the City of Valdosta, who was grateful to know she works with such kind and helpful colleagues.
 
The City of Valdosta applauds Roger Weaver for being named the April 2016 Employee of the Month, an award he received for going above and beyond the call of duty, both on and off the job.
