It’s hard to talk about global leaders in retail without mentioning Wal-Mart, but consumers often overlook the effects that such a retail giant has on a local economy. Wal-Mart on Norman Drive was recognized this week as the Chamber’s Leading Business of the Week, but for reasons much greater than being named the number one retailer in the world.
Wal-Mart’s Jennifer Calhoun took a step back from the impressive facts and figures surrounding the retailer’s sales revenue to highlight the important efforts that Wal-Mart is involved in to strengthen the local community and improve citizens’ quality of life.
“Wal-Mart’s major accomplishments include reducing waste by eighty percent, expanding on locally grown produce, supporting women, and leading efforts in response to natural disasters.”
Calhoun was excited to announce that Wal-Mart is working on updating their online shopping experience to make it more user-friendly. Wal-Mart continues to open and remodel facilities.
“The Chamber has served as a liaison,” said Calhoun, underlining the importance of the Chamber as an intermediary between businesses and other businesses, businesses and their community, and businesses and policymakers.
