Staff Report From Valdosta CEO

Wednesday, February 24th, 2016

The Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Planning Organization is exploring options for implementation of urban public transit in the Valdosta-Lowndes County area.  The local community is encouraged to participate in a survey regarding local public transportation at http://www.sgrc.us/public-transit.html.

The Valdosta Urbanized Area Transit Implementation Study will identify innovative and cost effective ways to implement public transit in the community.

“I urge all citizens to take a few moments to participate in the Valdosta Transit Survey provided by the Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Planning Organization,” said Valdosta Mayor John Gayle. “The collective input from our citizens who invest just five minutes to answer a series of strategically-crafted questions will serve to benefit our community by keeping citizens informed and involved in future transit implementation. I feel the citizens of Valdosta and Lowndes County will be receptive to a Transit System, and this study will provide the information our community needs to make an informed decision.”

The study will review existing public transit services and previous studies related to transit feasibility; evaluate commuting patterns to and from major employment and activity centers; and explore funding opportunities for additional transit service in the community.

The study will evaluate the ease of service implementation, service equity and efficiency, and funding stability of the proposed recommendations.  Understanding community transit priorities is critical to the success of the study!

“We are looking forward to receiving valuable input from members of the community and community leaders through our online survey before March 31, 2016.  Final study recommendations will be available in Summer 2016. We are looking forward to the future of urban public transit in the Valdosta and Lowndes County community.” said VLMPO Coordinator and study Project Manager, Corey Hull.
