Tuesday, November 10th, 2015
Valdosta State University will honor United States service men and women with a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, on the steps of the Student Union. The public is welcome to attend.
Sponsored by the VSU chapter of Student Veterans of America and the Office of Adult and Military Programs, the ceremony will begin with a display and presentation of the Battlefield Cross by the Moody Air Force Base Air Leadership School, followed by welcoming remarks from Dr. Cecil P. Staton, interim president of VSU.
Lt. Col. Reginald McCutcheon, a U.S. Air Force veteran and VSU student, is the featured speaker and will share experiences from his 34-year military career.
Veterans from the VSU campus and the Valdosta community will read the names of more than 200 fallen service members from Georgia who were involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. They will also read the names of those stationed at Moody Air Force Base who died in service to their country.
The event will conclude with a moment of silence.
“The Valdosta community has a rich history with the military, and VSU has served active-duty personnel, their families, retirees, and veterans at Moody Air Force Base for over 30 years,” said retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Mark A. Smith, adult admissions counselor in the Office of Adult and Military Programs and VSU SVA chapter adviser. “It’s a great partnership, and the Veterans Day event is an excellent way to show how much we appreciate the sacrifice our veterans have given in service to our country.”
