Azalea City Mustang Roundup and Car Show Returns to VSU Oct. 24th

Staff Report From Valdosta CEO

Thursday, October 22nd, 2015

Valdosta State University will present the second annual Azalea City Mustang Roundup and Car Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the University Center.

Developed and organized by Ron Butler, Campus Mail Services department manager, the Mustang Roundup and Car Show raises scholarship funds for students pursuing degrees at VSU. It helps the university realize its goal of recruiting, retaining, and graduating high-achieving students.

“I have been working at VSU for 14 years, and for 12 of those years students have worked for me,” he said. “I have realized how much $500 or $1,000 can mean to a student and how that $500 or $1,000 can make or break a student’s opportunity to come here.”

Through the inaugural Azalea City Mustang Roundup and Car Show, which was held in early October 2014, Butler was able to donate a little more than $1,000 to the VSU Scholarship Fund. He realized his goal — to raise enough money to sponsor at least one incoming freshman. This year he hopes to give more by once again using his passion for cars to help the students he sees on campus every day.

“Our first car show, from all accounts, was a huge success,” Butler said. “We received plenty of positive feedback from the attendees. One person said it was the most organized car show they had ever attended. Another said they could not believe this was our first car show and that they would definitely be attending the next one. We actually had around 50 cars throughout the day.”

Registration is $20 for car owners who wish to show off their mustangs, hot rods, antiques, as well as early and late model cars, all while raising much-needed funds for students determined to earn an education. Admission is free for spectators, and there will be drawings throughout the event for various prizes, including items from local auto parts stores and VSU Athletics.
