An estimated 500 participants are expected to attend the South Georgia Heart Walk, an event to benefit the work of the American Heart Association, Saturday Nov. 7.
Organizers said in a press release, "The walkers will unite to create hope, inspire change and celebrate success beginning at 8 a.m. at Valdosta State University’s University Center. This year, the American Heart Association and volunteer leadership has a fundraising goal of $125,000."
Combining fitness and philanthropy, the annual walk brings together corporate sponsors, walk teams, individual walkers, survivors of heart disease and stroke, and their families who are all taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle while raising funds to combat heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 5 leading killers, respectively, of American men and women, according to the press release.
The American Heart Association said each year, 1.2 million Americans will suffer a coronary attack and 700,000 will have a stroke. In Georgia, more than 16,550 deaths are caused a year due to a cardiovascular issue. The press release said, "By adopting a lifestyle of physical activity, individuals can reduce their healthcare costs, increase their productivity and improve their overall quality of life and longevity."
“Heart disease has touched my family like it has touched so many other South Georgia families,” said Leigh Worn of South Georgia Pecan Company, and 2015 Heart Walk chair. “The only way we have to stop this is by continuing to do research and spread awareness, and that's where the American Heart Association makes the difference."
Proceeds from the South Georgia Heart Walk go toward community programs, research advancements, education and more. The American Heart Association is currently funding 95 active American Heart Association research grants in Georgia totaling $14,692,312 and $150 million throughout the nation.
Key sponsors of the 2015 South Georgia Heart Walk include national presenting sponsor Subway, and local South Georgia Pecan, Co., Dasher Heart Center, Georgia Power, Southwest Georgia Bank, Sibley Heart Center Cardiology, Waller Heating & Air Conditioning, South Georgia Eye Partners, Citizens Community Bank, Myrna Ballard, Astro Exterminating Services, Inc. and Valdosta Medical Clinic.
