While we intuitively know that mentoring works, research has confirmed its power over and over again. From a reduction in depressive symptoms to gains in academic attitudes, studies done by organizations including the National Mentoring Partnership continue to show the positive impact mentorship has on society.
Focused on the one-on-one mentoring relationship, India Bell opened Freckles Mentoring this year to provide leadership and support to Valdosta’s youth. Bell grew up in Valdosta and understands the value of having a strong support system.
“I decided to start this business in Lowndes County because I want to give back to the community that has given me so much,” Bell said. “Freckles Mentoring dedicates our services to youth ages 10-18 and provides them with the one-on-one attention that they need to keep them on a path to success. If they are going in the wrong direction, our experienced mentors will help steer them back on track.”
From mentoring and tutoring services to life coaching and school supervision, Freckles Mentoring helps to strengthen positive social skills among mentees.
“Consistency is key,” Bell remarked. “What sets us apart is that we are very dedicated to spending that quality time with mentees to reinforce positive social behavior. We want our mentees to establish goals that they set and follow through on, and we’ll be there to help guide them along the way.”
Since joining the Chamber this month, Freckles Mentoring has been able to get their name out in the community through networking events and a tradeshow at the Rainwater Conference Center. The nonprofit organization celebrated with Chamber Ambassadors Saturday at their official ribbon cutting ceremony at McKey Park.
The value of mentorship is oftentimes immeasurable. At the most basic level, it shows that someone cares. If you know a young person in our community who could benefit from mentorship, please call Freckles Mentoring at (229)560-0705 or visit www.FrecklesMentoring.com to learn more about their referral program. They operate through the South Georgia Regional Library.
