City Hosts Spring E-Recycling Event on April 11th

Press release from the issuing company

Friday, April 10th, 2015

The City of Valdosta Public Works Department, in partnership with Keep Lowndes/Valdosta Beautifu and Atlanta Recycling Solutions, will host a Spring Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Mathis Auditorium parking lot, at 2300 North Ashley Street.

This event is one of two annual electronic recycling events and other year-round efforts that support the city’s recycling program by providing citizens with a viable solution to properly dispose of their electronics.  In 2014, over 30,000 pounds of electronics were collected at the spring and fall events.  Since the inception of the e-recycling events in 2006, the city has saved 267.56 tons of electronic waste— 535,124 pounds!—from being disposed of into the landfill.

Citizens may drop off a number of electronic items at the event, such as cell phones, laptops, disk and floppy drives, test equipment, modems, circuit boards, typewriters, cables, computer accessories, video machines, stereos, video cassette recorders (VCRs), CB radios, scanners, speakers, camcorders and cameras.  Televisions and CRT monitors will be accepted at the event; however, there is a $20 charge per television and a $5 charge per CRT monitor to cover the costs of dissembling for the recyclable parts.

A number of volunteers will be available at Saturday’s event to help unload items from citizens’ vehicles.  The “drive-through” feature makes disposing of these items very convenient to participants—providing no reason for citizens to get out their vehicles.

“The city is proud to host these events each year,” said Public Works Director Richard Hardy. “The city encourages all citizens to discard used or unwanted electronics equipment in this convenient and environmentally responsible manner and therefore play a major role in the preservation of our city.”

A number of items will not be accepted at the April 11 event—such as vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, washers, dryers, gas-powered equipment, non-electronic equipment, and other non-recyclable items.  Citizens may call the Public Works Department at (229) 671-3640 for more information, or click here for event flyer.  To stay informed of this event and other events taking place in the local government, sign up for E-News at www.valdostacity.com/publicinformation.
