In 2015, Telamon Corporation, a nonprofit organization, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary currently in 10 states. It all began as a Council of Churches in Raleigh, NC during the ‘war on poverty’, a campaign of legislation and social services aimed at reducing or eliminating poverty in the United States. In Georgia, Telamon first opened its doors in Valdosta in 1978 and has been in business “empowering individuals, improving communities” since then. Telamon helps eligible farmworkers upgrade their job skills by partnering with technical colleges and businesses that will retrain and/or teach them a specific trade. The goal is to obtain a full time, year ‘round employment. Furthermore, Telamon has a Head Start center for children ages 0-5 years in Valdosta. The Head Start center is geared for dependents of migrant workers.
