Valdosta Mayor John Gayle and City Engineer Pat Collins honored Stormwater Technician Willie Jones as the January 2015 Employee of the Month at the Jan. 8 City Council meeting.  Jones received a framed certificate, a check for $200, and his name appears on a plaque that is displayed inside of City Hall.

Jones has been employed by the city for nearly 19 years and has been promoted numerous times over the years. In his current position as the Stormwater Technician, Jones reviews civil site, grading and drainage plans, issues land disturbance permits, and conducts inspections and enforcement of permitted construction sites for violations. He also prepares the construction portions of the annual report for the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and prepares reports for the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission.

Jones expresses deep love for his community, which is evident by his determination to be a blessing to others.  Recently while driving home from work, he observed a woman and three young children beside a broken-down vehicle.  Being a mechanic by trade, he stopped to assist the citizens and quickly determined that the vehicle had a failed water pump.

When he learned that the family had limited resources to have the vehicle repaired, Jones quickly and unselfishly volunteered to fix the vehicle—which took nearly six hours to complete.  To cover the expenses, Jones solicited friends and coworkers and—in addition to what he contributed financially—he was able to make the necessary $500 worth of repairs for the family.

The City of Valdosta applauds Willie Jones for his willingness to go above and beyond extraordinary limits to help citizens and for being selected as the January 2015 Employee of the Month.
